THE transfer of Uganda Electricity Distribution Company (UEDCL) to Umeme, which was supposed to take place on January 1, 2005 will be effected on February 1, Eng. Irene Muloni, UEDCL’s managing director, has said.
Muloni said the transfer has been postponed thrice.
“Most of the things have been ironed out and the transfer fixed for January 1, 2005. Since it’s a weekend, its likely not to happen. The transfer cannot be in the middle of the month, so we are looking at February 1,” she said in an interview recently.
Muloni said gratuity for the workers, ironing out of logistical and technical matters between the Government and the World Bank, screening of employees to be retained, and auditing of the body’s books of accounts, had delayed the transfer.
She said the above issues had been solved.
Muloni said about sh10b has been put in a classified account for workers, who would be laid off and those who would voluntarily resign.
She said she would hand over the list of all company employees from which Umeme would choose whom to retain.
UEDCL employs about 1,500 workers countrywide.
Umeme was supposed to take over UEDCL in October after the signing of the concession agreement.
