A team of young sailors from Uganda leaves on Friday for the Mediterranean island of Malta, to take part in the annual EUROMED Championship for Optimist sailors.

Rosanna Betts (11), Laerke Fjord Garvey (13) and Lars Fjord Garvey (11), all pupils of Kabira International School, travel with their coach Gerry Garvey. Garvey will also take care of the juniors’ welfare while in Malta.

The team members are all from Victoria Nyanza Sailing Club at Kaazi, where both adults and children can learn to sail in structured training courses run during the year.
Lars is the top Optimist sailor in Uganda, and in September won the Dar Es Salaam Optimist Championship against strong competition from several more experienced Kenyan sailors.

Laerke and Rosanna came 3rd and 4th respectively in Dar Es Salaam, an indication of talent among the young sailors.
