AFRICAN countries have been warned against exporting raw materials because it denies citizens of employment and income.
President Yoweri Museveni said this on Wednesday during the 10th anniversary of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) at Mulungushi in Lusaka, Zambia.
Museveni is the COMESA chairman.
A statement from State House said Museveni urged Africa to address the issue of exportation of raw materials.
He said regional integration should promote local industrial processing and create favourable terms of trade through the World Trade Organisation.
Museveni said integration of African countries would strengthen the competitiveness of the continent.
He challenged African leaders and well-wishers to support integration efforts to stimulate development.
Museveni called for a plan on tourism, saying there was enormous potential in the sector.
He said successful regional integration entailed dropping some sovereignty aspects.
Museveni said national sovereignty should not stop the region from realising the positive results like a free trade area, customs union, peace, security and free movement of persons.
President Levy Mwana-wasa of Zambia called for strengthening of COMESA, saying the region commands a lot of potential for foreign and regional investments. He called for joint action to address the high transportation costs in the region.
