PARLIAMENT is to probe the evictions of tenants by absentee landlords, especially in Kiboga and Nakasongola districts.

The deputy Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga, referred the matter yesterday to the natural resources committee after it raised controversy in the House.

The committee will also look into the evictions by the National Planning Authority in Apac district.

Lubaga South MP Ken Lukyamuzi raised the issue, saying President Yoweri Museveni had written to lands minister Col. Kahinda Otafiire calling for action against absentee landlords who are allegedly oppressing tenants.

He said Museveni was inciting the Baruli tenants against their Baganda landlords by taking sides with the Baruli.

however, Bugangaizi MP Kasirivu Atwooki said the landlords were oppressing the tenants and threatened to mobilise tenants against anyone who interferes with their land.
“In Bugangaizi, we have only one medicine: spears and pangas,” he said.

Housing state minister Francis Babu criticised Kasirivu, saying he was inciting violence.
