FIFTY formerly blind people have regained their sight after successful eye surgery at Kibuli Muslim Hospital.

One of the patients, Assama Kakuko, 55, saw her children for the first time after the operation.

“I had not seen how my children look. I am grateful that I have regained my sight,” she said.

The director of the hospital, Dr. Mahmoud El-Gazer, said the beneficiaries of the free operation had been blind since their childhood.

“These people are seeing for the first time in their lives. This is a unique service for needy people,” he said.

He was on Thursday speaking at the “Seeing is Believing-Eye surgery” gathering at the hospital in Kampala.

The operation was jointly organised by Sight Savers International and Kibuli Hospital. Standard Chartered bank funded the operation at sh25m.
