TRANSPORT fares to up country destinations have risen as the Christmas season approaches.

The fare from Kampala to Rukungiri by bus has risen from sh12,000 to sh20,000.

The increment follows a rush by passengers to the Baganda Bus Park since the beginning of December, causing bus operators to raise the fares.

“The bus operators are asking for sh20,000 from Kampala to Kitgum yet we have been paying sh18,000,” said Musa Opio, a retired UPDF soldier.

Bus and taxi drivers usually take advantage of festive seasons to raise fares for passengers travelling to their villages.

Despite the increase in fares, Uganda Taxi Operators and Transporters Association (UTODA) have said taxi fares will not be increased.

UTODA national chairman John Ndyomugyenyi said yesterday, “UTODA is not having any increment in transport fares this season.”

He said the fares would remain stable owing to the money scarcity among passengers.

Ndyomugyenyi advised people intending to travel up country for Christmas to do it early enough to avoid inconveniences.

“You know there is always a transport problem during festive seasons. So it is better people go to their villages early enough,” he said.

He appealed to all UTODA drivers not to raise the fares to maintain a good relationship with the passengers.
