THE National Resistance Movement organisation (NRMO) has started mobilising the 2001 YK Museveni Election Task Force members ahead of the transition to multiparty politics in 2006.

The first vice-chairperson of the Interim Executive Committee, Moses Kigongo said in Kampala yesterday the NRMO would send two persons to each of the 56 districts to hold consultative meetings before forming district interim committees.

“Having considered the Constitution, the Political Parties and Organisations Act 2003 (PPOA), other laws and the NRM constitution, we have decided that with effect from December 17, we are sending two persons to each of the districts to consult with the former YK Museveni election district task forces, find out the status of our members and inform the headquarters in order for us to form interim district executive committees,” Kigongo said at the NRMO headquarters on Plot 10, Kyadondo Road.

Other members of the interim committee, including Mary Karooro Okurut, Ofwono Opondo and Dorothy Hyuha, attended the press briefing.

Kigongo said 112 people would also compile political information about the NRM from the districts and report back by December 27.

“They will be required to check on comrades who for various reasons such as death, defections, appointment into the civil service, security forces, or migration are no longer eligible to join the interim executive of the NRMO,” Kigongo said.

He said the district interim committees would be launched in January 2005 and would then be mandated to re-activate the former Museveni election task forces at lower levels.

He, however, said re-activating the task force did not necessarily mean that they were mobilising for Museveni’s re-election.

A source at the NRMO base said some people left on Monday to start the consultations.

“We are waiting for Parliament to pass the law so that we can start serious mobilisation. We are referring to the YK Musesevi Task Force because they are supporters of the NRM,” he said.

“We shall be mindful of the core values of the NRM such as broadbasedness, inclusion of women, youths, PWDs, workers, private entrepreneurs and elders,” he said.

Kigongo said NRMO would soon start a countrywide registration of its members.

“We are in advanced stages of registering our members. We are considering the bids to start printing the cards. We had started registration some time back but it was done using exercise books. This had some problems and was not easy to computerise. We want to be modern and this is why we have to repeat the registration,” he said.

He warned of people masquerading as NRM promoters and extorting money in exchange for NRM registration cards.
