UGANDA Tennis Association is set to host the biggest Davis Cup tournament ever from February 27-March 6.

“This will be the biggest Davis Cup tournament that the country will be hosting,” UTA secretary Cedric Babu, told a press Conference yesterday.

“Sixteen teams will be coming over for this tournament and that is a massive task for us.”
The local tennis body needs $ 57,000(Sh 99.7m) to successfully organise the Euro/Africa Group IV for the third time.

“We want to get everybody involved for this tournament. The association is going to sit down and set up committees to do specific duties,” Babu said. “UTA will seek sponsorship from various corporate companies to raise funds for the tournament.”

Uganda, who last hosted the prestigious all male tennis tournament in 2000 has never advanced to the next group III in the last seven years.

National Council of Sports has pledged total support for the event that will be the biggest event on the tennis calendar.

The countries that have confirmed participation include Malta, Senegal, Andorra, Djibouti, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Gabon, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Rwanda, Mauritius and hosts Uganda.

UTA has named a tentative squad that among others has Godfrey Uzunga.
