There is more to Godfrey Lukongwa Binaisa, former president and QC than meets the eye. Assuming he failed to make it, he could have carved out a life for himself as Uganda’s poet laureate!

For on Thursday, at his wedding reception at Speke Resort and Country Lodge Munyonyo, 88-year-old Binaisa unleashed a string of romantic proverbs on his bride, Tomoto Yamamoto that had even President Yoweri Museveni blushing and wiping the tears away from the corners of his eyes.

Thanking Museveni for granting him a state wedding, Binaisa had this to say of his bride. “We have been in love without a break and have been living in eternal bliss.” He went on to add that Yamamoto was his “living jewel.”

It was shortly after 6:30pm that the wedding entourage arrived for the reception. And there was no fanfare or pomp about the party.

Just the bride and groom flanked by bestman Gordon Wavamunno and matron Mrs Erikawa.

While all eyes were on the groom, attention shifted to Yamamoto for two reasons. One, she was the belle of the day and the other because of her outfit. No white flowing dress with a train a mile long. She chose Japanese — a colourful kimono and zori shoes.

In his speech, Wavamunno was witty. He talked about his association with Binaisa that dates back as far as 1964. But that was not really what guests wanted to hear. They wanted to know how Binaisa really met Yamamoto and Wavamunno did not let them down.

Three would be suitors had been brought before him but he did not take well to them. “Then one day a beaming Binaisa bursts into my office to proudly announce how he has found her. I assumed she was from around here until he told me he found her on the net,” Wavamunno said to laughter.

Proceedings took an upward twist when his daughter, Amooti Nakabiri, took to the floor to belt out three songs — Real Love, Lovely Day and I will Always Love You — for the couple. Her voice pierced the ballroom as did her screech when she was irked because guests choose to go for food rather than listen to her vocals.

Among the guests were Chief Gatcha Buthalezi from South Africa, General DB Msugori who was the overall in charge of the Tanzanian army when Binaisa was overthrown, plus a host of local dignitaries.
