THIRTEEN former senior members of staff of Makerere University, including former academic registrar Bernard Onyango, have sued the university, seeking payment of their pensions.

The 13 also include legal representatives of the estates of the late Rev. Dr. Eustace Rutiba, Prof. Herbert Kanabi-Nsubuga and Prof J. Ssekabunga.

The others are David Sentongo, John Katuramu, Catherine Munyagwa, Gershom Eyoku, Prof. John Dungu, A. Odonga and John Ssali.

They claim that they retired on June 30, 1996 and were given an “interim award”, which the University Council described as a stop-gap payment, pending the coming into force of a new scheme, which the Council intended to put in place after the currency reform.

Through Sebalu, Lule and Tumusingize Advocates, the former employees said Makerere was adamant on the issue.

However, when the case came up for hearing, Justice John Bosco Katutsi adjourned it to January 2005 to have all the parties in court.

The university, through Katera and Kagumire Advocates, denied the claims, saying their case was legally misconceived and should be struck off its list.

It says there is a pending suit between it and the administrators of Rutiba’s estate on the same issue.
