THE Uganda Red Cross (URC) has launched an appeal for aid to support the victims of the Tsunami disaster in Asia where the death toll is feared to be over 100,000.

The appeal is a contribution to the one launched by the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescents Societies to raise 50 million Swiss Francs, a statement said yesterday. It said cash donations can be deposited on the Uganda Red Cross CFA account 0100333005 at Citibank.

Cheques are payable to the Uganda Red Cross earthquake appeal.

URC said the logistical and transportation constraints involved in the appeal warranted cash donations as opposed to those in kind.

The statement said URC has set up an information desk through which people could link up with family, friends and relatives in the affected area.

The desk is at the URC offices at Lumumba Avenue. It is manned by the society’s tracing office, who can be contacted on telephone 031-260 615/6/7.
