THE Queen of England has honoured two Britons working in Uganda in Britain’s New Year honours list for their good work.

The Medical Director Hospice Uganda, Dr. Anne Merriman was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) in recognition of her services to healthcare in Uganda according to a press statement from the British High Commission.Fiona Carr, who runs Pianos for Uganda, a music school at YMCA, Wandegeya also received an MBE in recognition of the work she has undertaken in the field of music and teaching in Uganda. “Since her return to Uganda in 1996 she has taught piano free of charge to many talented young musicians. In 1998 she launched ‘Pianos for Uganda’ appeal, under which 38 pianos todate have been brought to Uganda,” the statement said.Carr was also one of the co-founders of the Kampala Music School, which opened in March 2001. “It’s a great honour for Uganda because it has been recognised as having had the capacity to have a model Hospice,” she said.Merriman said she had been honoured because of the success she had had with the provision of palliative care service to terminally ill patients, a model that involves the use of modern methods in the control of pain and disease symptoms.She said, “I have been honoured, but the honour is in recognition of the whole team here and for patients and families who have had a hand in our work.”Merriman said she had been in Uganda since 1993 when Hospice Uganda was founded. two more hospices have been opened in Mbarara and Hoima.Hospice Uganda looks after terminally ill cancer patients by bringing the modern methods of pain and symptoms control, counselling and spiritual support to the patients and their families who care for them after they have been discharged from hospital.“We assist AIDS patients especially those with cancer,” Merriman said.Ends
