By Moses Nampala in IgangaDistrict Police commanders have been instructed to list down all drunkard Police constables who are attached to their respective stations. The Inspector General of Police, Major General Katumba Wamala, gave the order on Saturday while addressing Police officers in Iganga Police barracks.Katumba said in order to discourage the growing habit that has spoilt the image of the force, drunkards will be subjected to a physical fitness test.“Whoever will fail the physical fitness drills, will be dismissed forthwith. This exercise will officially commence on Tuesday in Kampala district,” Wamala said.He said the findings of the Ssebutinde report had unearthed the rot that for a long time had existed in the force. He said the public had long lost confidence in the force because the most officers, regardless of their ranks, flouted profession rules for selfish gains.Katumba said he needed an effective force to police the estimated 22 million Ugandans. The Police force, is about 15,000 strong.“The current analysis on average, commits each constable to protect about 13,000 people. We have noticed that the current ratio of 1:13,000, immensely renders the efforts of restoring law and order, difficult. And that explains why we need fresh recruitment,” he said.Ends
