SIR— The African Cup of Nations has come. And for three weeks we shall enjoy entertainment from a tournament many regard as surpassed only by the World Cup.

Local fans are happy with the coverage already being given by the newspaper dailies and other media. However, I urge The New Vision and others not to ignore European football, especially the English Premier League, the Italian Serie A and the Spanish La Liga in the three weeks. Remember the point by Dr Ian Clarke in his Sunday Vision column recently that quite a number of people would not spend their money on newspapers were it not for their sports pages! European soccer has great influence on many of us. I for one love to watch my Newcastle United on Saturday or Sunday evening. But I equally love to read the following morning how their heroics on the pitch have been analysed by some soccer experts who will have watched it live. Transfer talk also excites us a lot. We want to be among the first to know whether La Liga’s spendthrift club Real Madrid is depriving the English Premier League of its arguably most valuable player, Arsenal’s Patrick Vieira. My appeal is that you add a page or two, since now there is the Australian Open as well. Ignatius Kabagambe Mbale
