By Solomon Muyita THE hopes for the UPDF soldiers upgrading from the makeshift huts (Mama yingiya pole-pole) to permanent houses may come to pass very soon.Consultancy into the programme to build better houses for soldiers has been completed and a report handed over to the Ministry of Defence by Habitat Consultancy. State minister for defence Ruth Nankabirwa told The New Vision in an interview last weekend that her ministry would advertise bids for building within two months. The ministry is targeting over 20,000 descent low-cost houses for soldiers in different army barracks.“The ministry wants descent life for its soldiers.That is why we are putting up dormitories for them.We are targeting four barracks countrywide but we shall start with Kakiri in Wakiso district,” Nankabirwa said. She also said the soldiers at Mbuya barracks would be shifted to Kakiri after the construction.Defence minister Amama Mbabazi on Friday said at the staff party at Nile Hotel, Kampala that the programme was under Nankabirwa. He said the ministry wants good living conditions for the army as a step forward in professionalising it.Ends
