Army Kills 18 Kony Rebels

EIGHTEEN rebels of the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) were killed in battles with the UPDF between October 2001 and January 25 this year.

By Dennis Ojwee EIGHTEEN rebels of the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) were killed in battles with the UPDF between October 2001 and January 25 this year.Five rebels were captured and 50 surrendered, Col. Geoffrey Muheesi, the UPDF 4th division commander, said on Saturday during celebrations to mark the 16th anniversary of the National Resistance Army/Movement at Pece Stadium in Gulu.This brings to 105 the number of Kony rebels killed by the UPDF. A total of 134 rebels surrendered. The rebels also killed a cumulative number of 35 UPDF combatants since last year.Muheesi said six formerly abducted children were rescued within two weeks in the Acholi sub region, bringing to 297 the number of captives rescued since January 1, 2001. He said 291 captives were rescued by the end of last year. He said the rebels have not abducted any child this year.Journalists of the northern Uganda Media Club based in Gulu in the first week of January were told by the UPDF 4th division spokesman, Capt. Khelil Magara, that a total of 87 LRA rebels had been killed last year.Muheesi said 18 more rebels had been killed in various operations by the UPDF within a fortnight before the NRM celebrations.
