Govt to resettle street children

THE Government has set up an intensive rehabilitation programme to ensure children are removed from the street, screened and provided with education under the Universal Primary Education programme, reports Martin Kiiza.

THE Government has set up an intensive rehabilitation programme to ensure children are removed from the street, screened and provided with education under the Universal Primary Education programme, reports Martin Kiiza.The chairman National Council for Children, the Rev. Fr. Turyamureeba, said the Government has also proposed a scheme for street girls to be provided with separate orphanage to avoid being turned into prostitutes if they remained too long on the streets.Turyamureeba, who recently witnessed the handing-over of a sh1m cheque to street children by the Chinese Shanghai Hotel management, told the excited children at Little Sisters of St. Francis Centre, Nsambya Kevina, that the Government will also take care of them. The centre coordinator, Sr. Alma was present. The items included several sacks of rice, T-shirts, beef and plates.The Shanghai Hotel director, Mei-Yuan, said they were keen on promoting the wellbeing of street children.She urged other organsiations to come up in support of the children.
