‘Kabaka will not stay in Mengo’

THE Buganda minister for local government, Kamala Kanamwangi, has said the Kabaka cannot stay in the Mengo palace even if its renovation is completed.

By Frederick KiwanukaTHE Buganda minister for local government, Kamala Kanamwangi, has said the Kabaka cannot stay in the Mengo palace even if its renovation is completed.He was on Wednesday presiding over the installation ceremony of the Nyimbwa chief and six parish chiefs in Luweero.Kannamwangi said the monarch can only stay in the palace if the Butikkiro is handed back to the kingdom.“Even if it were to be fully renovated, Kabaka cannot sleep in it unless the Butikkiro is occupied by the Katikkiro,” Kannamwangi said.The Butikkiro, currently housing the Mengo court, is the official house for Buganda’s Katikkiro.Kannamwangi said the kingdom needs sh900m to complete the renovation of the Mengo palace.The minister criticised the government for not giving Buganda the Butikkiro, saying it was playing double standards.He said people should not to be satisfied with what the government has so far given, saying the blood that was shed has not been fully rewarded.
