PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni is among 86 world leaders who have converged in Australia for the 2002 Commonwealth Heads of State and Government Summit. The summit will be opened today by Queen Elizabeth.

The summit will be opened today by Queen Elizabeth.Security was tightened on Friday as the leaders arrived in the tiny eastern Australian resort town of Coolum in Queensland State, on the eve of the talks set to focus on terrorism and the escalating pre-electoral violence in Zimbabwe.Museveni’s press secretary Mary Okurut yesterday said the President, accompanied by his wife Janet, third deputy premier and foreign affairs minister, James Wapakhabulo and former premier Kintu Musoke arrived in Australia yesterday for the summit.Among other leaders who arrived on Friday were South Africa’s President Thabo Mbeki, Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa, Kenya’s Daniel arap Moi, Zambia’s Levy Mwanawasa, Nigeria’s Olusegun Obasanjo, Mozambique’s Joachim Chissano and Britain’s Prime Minister Tony Blair.A total of 35 heads of government will attend the talks, and 51 nations are sending delegations.Ends
