By Nathan EtenguThe Member of Parliament for Kagoma county in Jinja district, Dr. Frank Nabwiso, has advised the Basoga to take advantage of the existing natural resources and infrastructure to develop their region. He said lake Victoria, the river Nile and the roads that link Busoga to the Indian Ocean were an impetus for development. Nabwiso was recently addressing the Basoga students at the Islamic University in Uganda where he had accompanied the Jinja mayor-elect Mr. David Wakudhumira to attend the Basoga Nseete Students Union meeting.“We hold the lifeline (road infrastructure) to Mombasa and the bigger part of lake Victoria is in Busoga,” Nabwiso said.He said the Basoga should take advantage of such opportunities to develop the region other than waiting for investors. He said Busoga had a population of 2.2 million people but was still under-developed yet it had many educated people.Nabwiso said the academic standard in the region was deteriorating and that majority of the students in the prominent schools in Busoga were not Basoga. He said in the recent admissions to Makerere University, Busoga region only sent 104 students while Masaka district sent in 128. “I do not want to paint a bad picture, but if Basoga do not work hard, we shall be slaves in our own country,” Nabwiso said.
