Govt buys sh168 land

THE Government has so far bought 4,500 hectares of land worth sh168m for the palm oil project in Kalangala district, the LC5 chairman elect Daniel Kikoola has said.

By Dismus BuregyeyaTHE Government has so far bought 4,500 hectares of land worth sh168m for the palm oil project in Kalangala district, the LC5 chairman elect Daniel Kikoola has said.Kikoola was addressing residents over the weekend during the hand over of cheques worth sh65m to four landlords in a ceremony that was presided over by the Uganda Lands Commission chairman, Besweri Mulondo, at the district headquarters.The Government wants 6,000 hectares of land for the US$60m palm oil project funded by the World Bank and the Government.Kikoola said 15 landlords in Bujumba, Kalangala have sold their land for the project.Kikoola warned the landlords not to misuse the money, saying they should invest it in profitable ventures.“Don’t make a mistake of diverting the money into marrying women, boozing and buying luxurious goods. The land you have sold is your life, put your money to good use to avoid regrets,” Kikoola said.Mulondo enumerated the benefits of the project, which include increasing employment opportunities and the accessibility of electricity in Ssese islands.
