By Edith KimuliPARLIAMENT has called for the remuneration of women councillors for effective service. The parliamentary sessional committee on social services recommended that women councils should be catered for in terms of remuneration and facilitation. The committee chaired by Dorothy Hyuha, the Tororo Woman Member of Parliament, was discussing the Women Councils Bill which is about to be tabled before Parliament. Wadri Kassiano Ezati (Tegero) said the women councils only get money when they are elections for purposes of mobilising support and after that they are forgotten. The MPs recommended that the secretary for gender at the district should be the chairperson of the women’s council to avoid confusion and protect the interest of women. On the issue of women NGO representation, Kabakumba Masiko (Bujeje), suggested that only the National Association of Women Organisations in Uganda (NAWOU) should be involved and Uganda Women’s Network be left out contrary to what the Bill was reading. She said all the women NGOs were affiliated to NAWOU.
