By Grace MasikoTHE Banyoro have revived the 100-year old Nyangire rebellion to block Fred Ruremera from assuming Kibale LC5 chair and to force the Government to secure the land for them.In a memorandum handed over to the Cabinet committee now in Kibaale probing ethnic tension there, the anti-settlers group, Mubende Bunyoro Committee (MBC), headed by Joseph Kazairwe, said they will not allow Ruremera, a Mukiga and “foreigner”, to head the district. The National Political Commissar, Crispus Kiyonga, state minister for economic monitoring Omwony Ojwok, MPs Mary Amajo and Beatrice Magola Zirabamuzaale are on the committee.“The President should take over Kibale because the district is ungovernable. Nyangire rebellion is on and live,” Kazairwe told the committee.Nyangire was formed in the 1900s to protest the appointment of Buganda chiefs in Bunyoro Kingdom by the British.MBC said in an eight-page memo the Nyangire rebellion II is live and on now. It has a historical precedence of 1910 when we resisted Buganda in Hoima, Masindi, Buyaga and Bugangaizi (the lost counties of Bunyoro). But security officials in Kibaale said they were on the look-out for the recruits into the Nyangire movement whose revival is likely to aggravate the instability there.Kiyonga on Saturday met leaders and pledged the Government’s commitment to ending the rift. The pro-settlers said outgoing LC5 chairman, Sebastian Ssekitoleko’s supporters were fanning the tension to frustrate Ruremera. At one point, the local leaders meeting at Kagadi Modern Primary School became rowdy, forcing the military Police to intervene. Some councillors warned of clashes if Ruremera takes office and the settlers are not relocated.
