The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a parastatal organization under the Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Industry. UNBS is charged with the overall responsibility of Standardization, Quality Assurance, Laboratory Testing and Weights and Measures systems and conformity assessment in Uganda in order to facilitate private sector development. UNBS wishes to recruit competent and qualified Ugandans not over 35 years of age with initiative, integrity and dedication to fill the positions shown below:Post 1/UNBS/2001: Technician - Industrial Metrology(One Post)Responsibilities and dutiesThe successful candidate will be expected to perform the following:1. To assist Metrology Officers in executing calibration tasks.2. To carry out sampling, calibration and checking of results.3. To keep detailed records of all calibration work, inventories, manuals and files.4. To maintain/keep chart of values of the units and to record daily environmental conditions of the Laboratories.5. To store equipment.6. To carry-out routine maintenance of the equipment/instruments.7. To assist Metrology Officers in assembling and installation of equipment/instruments.8. To supervise and oversee cleanliness of Metrology Laboratory, and ensure utilities are correctly operating.9. To perform any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.General Requirements and Qualifications:1. Possess a minimum educational qualification of a Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.2. Have knowledge of the working and operation of air conditioning units.3. Be prepared to undertake on-the-job training for an initial period of at least 6 months.Post 2/UNBS/2001: Accounts Clerk (One Post)Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be expected to perform the following:1. To receive and bank revenue of the Bureau.2. To maintain petty cash flows.3. To issue Cash Receipts for all collections of money.4. To maintain petty cash journal.5. To post Debtors Ledger.6. To carry out any other duty that may be assigned from time to time.General Requirements and Qualifications:Candidates must have at least the following minimum qualifications:1. A diploma in Accounting and, in addition, training in computerized accounting.2. Experience of at least 3 years in handling payments, preparing receipts, etc.3. Use of Accounting software including Pastel, among others.Post 3/UNBS/2001: PERSONAL SECRETARY (One Post)Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be expected to perform the following:1. Take dictation and transcribe by typing error-free work.2. Type reports, minutes, letters and correspondences.3. File reports, correspondences and other documents.4. Maintain files in proper order, ensuring security of information.5. Receive and attend to clients - either in person or telephone.6. Draft letters and other material of a routine nature.7. Reply to inquiries.8. Assume responsibility and day-to-day operations of the office functions.9. Draw attention of the Executive Director to issues that need urgent attention.General Requirements and QualificationsThis position requires a person with:1. Minimum of a Diploma in Secretarial Studies.2. Typing speed of at least 80 words per minute and 120 words per minute in shorthand.3. Proficiency in the application of MS Office set of computer packages, E-mail, Fax and in use of other modern office equipment.4. Experience of at least 5 years as a Personal Secretary in a busy and reputable organisation.5. Ability to plan and complete work within deadlines.6. Ability to work fast but accurately, while continuously re-prioritising so as to meet various and changing deadlines, to draw the attention of superiors to urgent work, and to keep documents safely.7. Ability to work with minimum supervision.Post 4/UNBS/2001: TECHNICIAN - LEGAL METROLOGY (One Post)General Requirements and Qualifications:The successful candidate must possess a minimum qualification of an Ordinary Diploma in either Mechanical Engineering, Physics or Mathematics from a recognised Institution and with at least two years of experience in the field. Extra qualification or knowledge of measuring or weighing technology is an added advantage.The candidate must be prepared to undergo on-the-job training. Once on job, successful applicants must be prepared to testify in courts of law, in connection with their work.Duties and Responsibilities:The successful candidates will:1. Verify weighing and measuring instruments used in trade for their accuracy, following approved procedures.2. Carry out inspections on weighing scales and equipment and on pre-packaged goods following approved procedures.3. Maintain testing equipment.4. Maintain records of goods and equipment seized during inspections.5. Sensitise the public on issues of Legal Metrology (Weights and Measures).6. Carry out any investigations in relation to Weights and Measures work, as directed.7.
