NGO Hailed For Fighting Nomadism

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni on Sunday commended the Italian Co-operation Development (ICD) for encouraging the Karimojong to abandon nomadic pastoralism.

By Geresom MusamaliPRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni on Sunday commended the Italian Co-operation Development (ICD) for encouraging the Karimojong to abandon nomadic pastoralism.ICD is a Moroto-based non-governmental organisation.Presidential press assistant Mary Karooro Okurut, said in a statement on Tuesday that Museveni, who is on a working visit to Karamoja, commended ICD for the good work it was doing in the development of the region.The President visited the ICD headquarters in Moroto where its co-ordinator, Mr. Lorenzo Giomo, briefed him on the organisation’s projects and programmes.Among them are the water-drilling project under which several boreholes have been drilled, the construction of lavatories for schools and health centres, as well as supporting several government health projects and programmes.The President called for further co-operation between the Government and ICD so that more meaningful development programmes are started in the region.Such programmes include growing of grapes as an alternative source of income which would help the people discard nomadism in favour of a settled life.Ends
