Convict Tabliqs, State Tells High Court

By Hillary NsambuTHE state has asked the High Court to convict the 15 Buseruka Tabliqs currently facing treason charges, saying it has adduced enough evidence against them.Senior Principal State Attorney Simon Byabakama Mugenyi was on Tuesday making final submissions before acting Justice Mary Engena Maitum.Mugenyi told court that during the trial, the state produced sufficient evidence in which many of its witnesses were their former colleagues in the rebel camps. The witnesses said those who were engaged in the rebel activities had intended to overthrow the Government. They were under the training of Sulaiman Musisi, a former UPDF soldier.The 15 suspects who include two women were indicted for establishing a rebel camp at Kakyera gorge in Buseruka county, Hoima district where they allegedly contrived to over throw the Government by use of arms.The court heard that on February 25, 1995, a group of rebels, most of whom were Muslims of the Tabliq sect, attacked Buseruka Police Post and killed two policemen.They allegedly looted military ware from Buseruka trading centre.Ends
