By Yunusu AbbeyTOP government officials, including ministers, have since last week been flocking to the Inspector General of Government (IGG’s) office to declare their wealth. The rush followed Prime Minister Prof. Apollo Nsibambi’s appeal to all those concerned to fill forms detailing their income, assets and liabilities in compliance with the Leadership Code regulations.Nsibambi’s order was in a March 26, 2002 letter.“Since the Prime Minister’s directive, a number of ministers, Permanent Secretaries and other senior government officials, have filled and returned the forms to the IGG’s office,” a source said. The IGG, Jotham Tumwesigye, confirmed the reports yesterday. He, however, said those rushing to declare their wealth ignored the government directive.“Although the ministers and the rest have been aware of this requirement, they only started responding after the Prime Minister appealed to them to comply with the Leadership Code,” Tumwesigye said.“As of now, virtually all ministers, except about eight, and Permanent Secretaries have declared their wealth to my office.“I can say since the Prime Minister wrote that letter to ministries and government departments, the response has been very positive. The directors in ministries have also responded well,” he added.Tumwesigye could not, however, give off hand a break down of each category of government officials who have declared their wealth.
