CMI Net Treason Suspects At UPDF Factory

FIVE people, two of them army officers attached to the National Enterprises Corporation (NEC), a commercial arm of the Ministry of Defence, have been arrested for allegedly recruiting rebels.

Peter Bariheihe, Sgts John Odoi and Sam were picked up from Luweero Industries, part of NEC located in Nakasongola district on Monday by agents of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), security sources said yesterday. The names of the other suspects were not made available.NEC chief Lt. Col. Fred Mwesigye said, “Some people were picked up by security agencies on suspicion of being involved in subversive activities. So we should allow them (security agencies) to do their work.”High-ranking UPDF officers said CMI carried out the arrests. They said the suspects are part of the investigations targeting the recruitment and operations of People’s Redemption Army (PRA) led by renegade Col. Samson Mande.“We have rounded up many of them and we are continuing to arrest more. Some are released after interrogation, others are detained depending on the available evidence,” a military intelligence source said. He said the officers arrested from NEC were allegedly implicated in rebel recruitment by people already in detention.Lt. Fred Birimumaiso alias Basigi Baguma alias Albaba, 40, of Port Bell, Luzira near Kampala now on remand in Kigo Prison, once worked with NEC in Nakasongola.Ends
