THE information state minister, Basoga Nsadhu, has said some FM radio stations risk closure or operating under strict regulations because of the programmes they air, reports Solomon Muyita. The minister, who was speaking at the official launching of Dembe FM, owned by Kampala tycoon, Karim Hirji, said he had licensed 100 FM radios in the country, but some of them had diverted from their original ideas.“Don’t lead us into making strict rules for you. You (radio owners) told us that you have constructive programmes for the people but end up airing bed-matters on your radios. You forget that I have the authority to order a radio to open or close,” he said. The ceremony was held on Wednesday at the Hotel Equatoria in Kampala, the home of Dembe radio station broadcasting on frequency 90.4 FM. 60% of its programmes are aired in Luganda and 40% in English.Hirji said his dream was to make Dembe FM the best station in the country. He said he would embark on putting up booster stations in every region in the country.Ends
