By Florence Nakaayi THE Mukono district LC5 chairman, Joseph Kanakulya Banga, yesterday told court that his papers were genuine. He was defending himself against allegations made by his opponent, Francis Lukooya, that he did not have the required qualifications. He claims Kanakulya presented forged certificates at his nomination.“My certificates are not forged. they are genuine and they are mine,” Kanakulya told Justice Caroline Okello at the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court. In support of his O’ level certificate, Kanakulya presented to court a copy of the Uganda Argus dated February 20, 1964, with the names and results of students who sat in 1963 at St Henry’s Kitovu in Masaka where he appeared as J.K Wasswa.Earlier, the headmaster of Kitovu had said Joseph K. Wasswa did not exist in their records. He told court he studied A’ level on his own in 1967, while working as a licensed teacher at St. Joseph Girls Secondary School, Nsambya.Later, he applied to sit for A’ levels as a private candidate in 1969 at a centre in Mengo, Kampala, under index U092/527.The Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) secretary, Matthew Bukenya, also testified that according to their 1969 records, Joseph K. Wasswa sat as a private candidate for the Joint examination for the High School Certificate and General Certificate of Education equated to A’ level. He also sat for the Cambridge School Certificate, equivalent to the O’ level qualifications.Ends
