England side goodSir- Allow me to address some of my fellow football fans. My target will be those who have always had little or no respect at all for Sven Goran Erikson’s England.

My target will be those who have always had little or no respect at all for Sven Goran Erikson’s England.Like the Argentines themselves, soccer legend Maradona and captain Veron as cheer leaders, you have learnt that underrating England can sometimes be very costly.Beating an England side at any World Cup tournament in the past had never been easy for the South Americans. In 1962 Argentina went down 1-3 and in 1966 England triumphed 1-0 over their historical arch-rival. In 1986 in Mexico, Maradona had to resort to cheating with his infamous ‘hand of god’ to achieve a narrow 2-1 victory. Then in 1998 Veron was in the Argentine side that eliminated a ten-man England only in penalty shootouts in the second round. What about the match in Saporo itself? Michael Owen hit the post in the first half and later in the second half shot narrowly wide when his cross goal effort did not hit his far post target. Scholes’ thunderbolt of a shot was parried to safety by the keeper. England is thus better placed to progress. Ignatius Kabagambe, MBALEAfrica can lift the WCSir- Football fans in Mbale and maybe elsewhere in Uganda were kept in suspense for what seemed to be a technical fault in the opening game of the World Cup between France and Senegal. Senegal played a formidable game and showed the World that African soccer has come a long way and has improved tremendously.Senegal’s 1-0 win against France was a shock to Europe, Asia and America but a great joy to Africa and a signal that Africa can no longer be underestimated. We can even lift the World Cup. Why not? Rev Francis Aseete, SOROTI
