By John Nzinjah AN Allied Democratic Front (ADF) child rebel rescued recently by the UPDF in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has admitted that he participated in the March 17, 2001 attack on Kasese town. The 13-year-old boy’s revelation clears doubts about who was responsible for the attack in which 11 people were killed.Property including 54 vehicles worth hundreds of millions of shillings was destroyed in the attack. An army source in Kasese town said the child, whose identity was still being concealed by security officials, had clearly indicated that the attack on the town had been made by the ADF rebels. The attack occurred five days after the presidential elections of March 12, 2001, prompting suspicion that it could have been organised by opponents of President Yoweri Museveni.During the presidential campaigns, some supporters of Museveni’s opponents had warned Kasese residents that if they voted for Museveni, the ADF rebels would attack again. While closing a two-day workshop for army officers in the 507th brigade at Verina Gardens in Kasese town, the commander of the Rwenzori Mountains Alpine Brigade, Lt. Col. Dula Mawa, confirmed the child’s rescue and his involvement in the attack. Ends
