By Moses Nampala in JinjaSix convicts of mob justice were yesterday sentenced to death by the High Court in Jinja. The convicts killed four people in a gruesome murder before setting their bodies on fire two years ago at Bugada village in Kamuli district.Jinja Resident Judge Justice Yorokamu Bamwine committed the convicts who included Patrick Kyabire, Moses Kubuza, Ntalo Wamando, David Maganda, Wamuwuliro Wamondo and Abudi Mpiira, to suffer death.Passing the sentence, Justice Bamwine dismissed the alibi of denial put up in their defence, saying prosecution evidence had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.“Prosecution evidence properly identified the convicts among the killers. The possibility of mistaken identity has been excluded. The convicts shared a common intention of killing the four victims. I find them guilty and sentence them to suffer death in a manner provided by the law,” the judge ruled.Court heard that on October 19, 2001 at Kigoli village in Gadumire sub-county, the convicts murdered Eseza Namusobya, Fred Mawulire, Moses Mubeezi and David Swaga. The incident followed the death of Paul Kigoli, killed by unknown persons. Kigoli’s body was discovered near the home of Namusobya, who was a waragi (local potent gin) seller. The late Kigoli was seen drinking at her place the previous evening.Court also heard that the previous evening, Kigoli had been seen in the company of the other mob-justice victims who included Mawulire, Mubeezi and Swaga on a drinking spree at Namusobya’s place. The death of Mugoli was reported to police, where Namusobya, Mubeezi, Mawulire, and Swaga later on the fateful day arrested and taken at Gadumire Local Administration Police cells for safe custody. The convicts and others still at large are reported to have gone on rampage, raided Gadumire local administration police Post, broke into the cells and forcefully removed the suspects after overpowering the officers on duty.Court heard that the convicts and others still at large are reported to have frog-matched Namusobya to her hut, locked her inside and burnt her to ashes.Namusobya’s co-accused, Mubeezi and Swaga were in turns also hacked to death with sharp weapons and their bodies burnt to ashes. The convicts reportedly stayed at the crime scene for sometime to celebrate as the bodies burnt.Ends
