By Hillary Nsambu PATRICK Katto, former director in the International Credit Bank (ICB) was yesterday committed to the civil prison at Luzira for failure to pay sh2.36b.High Court Registrar, Commercial Division, Precious Ngabirano ruled that since Katto had failed to show good reason why he should not be sent to the civil prison, he had no option, but to send him to the civil prison. The court heard that Katto and his father Thomas Katto, who was the managing director of International Credit Bank (ICB), guaranteed sh2.369,249,261 from their bank to run Sanyu Television, which they also owned. But they failed to repay the debt until the bank was liquidated by the Bank of Uganda. However, Katto’s father with whom he was jointly liable for the repayment, requested court not commit him to the civil prison, saying he would try to meet his obligation by October. When ICB dragged Patrick Katto to court, demanding a reason why he should not be sent to Luzira civil prison for failure to meet his obligation, the court was informed by his lawyer, Bob Kasango, that he had failed to agree with Mugerwa and Masembe Advocates, the lawyers for ICB and Bank of Uganda. The registrar said since Katto Junior had failed to come up with a tangible proposal on how to pay the debt, he was inclined to send him to the civil prison for six months.Ngabirano also ordered the judgment creditor to pay Katto’s subsistence of sh2,000 per day for six months.
