By Richard MutumbaTHE National Social Security Fund monthly collection has doubled in the last four months from sh3b to sh6b, the gender and labour minister, Zoe Bakoko-Baloru, told MPs yesterday.Bakoko said this when she appeared before the Parliament committee on social services to defend her ministry’s policy statement for the 2002/2003 financial year.Bakoko attributed the current achievements of the fund to the new management and board led by Onegi Obel. She said as the fund broadens its financial base, it will be able to embark on other social security projects. “I suspended the previous management because it was weak and the board because it failed to execute its responsibility to monitor and supervise management,” Bakoko said. She said it was evident that NSSF was making huge losses.Bakoko said at one time, the management paid sh3b to consultants without the permission of the board. “The new management and board are trying to regularise the shoddy contracts left behind by the previous management,” she added. She reiterated that the fund will not be privatised, but will be reorganised. She was accompanied to Parliament by state ministers Alex Kamugisha (Youth), Grace Akello (Entandikwa), Florence Naiga (Disabled), Henry Obbo (Labour) and the permanent secretary, Kakima Ntambi.Ends
