The UPDF 503rd Brigade Commander, Lt. Col. Nelson Ssemwezi, and his paymaster are being detained in connection with the disappearance of millions of shillings in soldier’s salaries, sources said yesterday.

Nelson Ssemwezi, and his paymaster are being detained in connection with the disappearance of millions of shillings in soldier’s salaries, sources said yesterday.The sources said Ssemwezi was being investigated for the loss of the money meant for several months salary. The 503rd Brigade is one of those involved in Operation Iron Fist, the code-name for the UPDF’s anti-Kony rebel drive in the north.Ssemwezi was arrested last month and detained in Makindye military Police barracks and later transferred to Gulu barracks.Army spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza yesterday confirmed that Ssemwezi was being investigated for misappropriation of salary of soldiers under his control. Ssemwezi fought in Kisangani III battle against the Rwandan army in June 2001 and later became one of the UPDF brigade commanders in Bunia, DR Congo. His wife was yesterday quoted as saying her husband was being detained without charges.Ends
