ABED Lubambula wants to make an impression at the Africa Motorcycling championship this weekend after a string of successes in local events. The national champion leads a six-man set for the Africa Motor Union (AMU) event due in Nairobi. William Muwonge writes that Ugandan riders will be competing in the event for the first time since 1984. Lubambula, who boasts a rich collection of local wins, arrived in Nairobi yesterday along with three other riders who are self sponsored. Enock Kyembe, Ibrahim Kironde and Bosco moved with Lubambula. Two other riders — George Semakula and Derreck Serunjogi, sponsored by motor rally driver Yusuf Karmali, will complete Uganda’s line-up. The two men and team coach Godfrey Katende are due in Nairobi on Friday. “The riders are ready to take on any challenge,” former star motorcyclist Katende said.Katende said his men, who will be riding Yamaha 250cc machines, are entered in the open event for top riders with machines above 125cc. The championship also has the seniors’ event for bikes of 125cc and the juniors’ category for machines below 80cc. But the Ugandans will have to contend with the continent’s greats from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria.
