By Richard MutumbaTHE Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) has condemned the current wave of atrocities committed by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) on the people of northern Uganda.“The senseless killings, abductions, looting, rape of internally displaced people cannot be tolerated,” the foundation’s executive director, Livingstone Ssewanyana, said in a statement yesterday. He said the rebels must be held accountable for the destruction of property and suffering of innocent people of Mucwini sub-county, Kitgum town, Namokora-Lapana in Chua county, Achol-pii Refugee Camp and in Pader district. The foundation urged all people of goodwill to denounce the rebellion and call for the respect of human rights in the region.“The Government should assure Ugandans that it has the capacity to protect them and their property, by exploring all avenues that would limit the conflict in the region,” Ssewanyana said.He urged the UN and the African Union to take measures that would reduce conflict in the area as they had done in other parts of the continent.Ends
