A Police officer in charge of Kira Road Police armoury was on Tuesday night arrested over trying to sell a rifle.

By Steven CandiaA Police officer in charge of Kira Road Police armoury was on Tuesday night arrested over trying to sell a rifle.Woman Police Constable Kahana Amoit, who has been in charge of the armoury since 1998, was arrested on Lugogo by-pass at 7:30pm as she allegedly exchanged the gun for sh350,000.Police Spokesman Asuman Mugenyi yesterday said Lawrence Osete, a private security guard and a resident of Banda Nile Zone, was also arrested in the same operation. For his role as the middleman, Osete was to earn a commission of sh150,000.“For some time we have been trying to look into the movement of our guns and the trustworthiness of those entrusted with our armouries.“We used our detectives to approach those in charge and offer to buy guns from them,” Mugenyi said.He said both parties had for some time been holding meetings to negotiate the price and the rendezvous where the rifle was to be delivered. “A day before the arrest, the parties agreed to the sum of sh350,000 and Lugogo By-pass as the meeting point.“On Monday, our detectives went with a vehicle to pick her and their merchandise which she had loaded with 29 rounds of ammunition,” Mugenyi said.But as soon as the parties parked on the Lugogo By-pass and swapped money for the rifle, police detectives who lay in wait moved in and blocked the dealer’s car.Amoit was arrested with sh200,000 that had been tucked away in her brazier while Osete was netted with his cut of sh150,000.Both were detained at Kampala Central Police Station.Ends
