The High Court has commenced a murder retrial of a soldier and another man indicted over the 1997 killing of a driver of the Uganda Commercial Bank (UCB) bullion van escort Police pick-up truck, reports Florence Nakaayi.

Christopher and Fred Musisi, a special hire driver, allegedly waylaid the van which was transporting sh360m to UCB western branches in Masindi, Kiboga and Hoima.

The two and others still at large allegedly set up a roadblock at Kizigo near Busunju in Mubende on April 2, 1997 and shot dead John Bosco Ssembatya who was driving the Police Escort to the Bullion Van. They were convicted in December 1998.

The Court of Appeal ordered a retrial after Cpl. Ssemambo and Musisi appealed against conviction and the death sentence by the High Court.

However, on appeal, the Court of Appeal ruled that there were some anomalies in the trial and ordered that another judge handles the retrial.

Justice Akiiki Kiiza is conducting the retrial at the High Court sitting at Nakawa.
