THE increasing poor attitude of nurses and doctors towards patients has retarded delivery of improved health services in government hospitals, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health Richard Muhinda said yesterday.
“Attitude of all medical officers must change. You are not warm, you put on a face that is repulsive. You come like a charged buffalo and patients fail to tell you their backgrounds,” he said.
“You do not show love. Humanity should be put at your forefront. Can you imagine a nurse asking a pregnant woman why she became pregnant? This bad attitude forces patients to go to private health units,” Muhinda said.
Muhinda was speaking at a recent Ministry of Health workshop for Central Region District Directors of Health Services, division and sub county medical officers at Mukono.
The Permanent Secretary also noted that absenteeism of health officers from their units hindered delivery of health services to the public. He said most doctors and nurses spent lots of time at their private clinics.
“Patients come to your units for treatment but they hardly find a doctor. Even where a doctor’s house is provided, you never find the doctor at the health centre where they are posted,” he noted. He however commended them for the good work well done in health centres.
