PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni yesterday said he was happy that the multi-billion-shilling grain warehouse at Nakawa is now ready to handle exports.

Museveni was taken around the complex located at the Uganda Revenue Authority headquarters, by the chairman of the Uganda Grain Traders (UGT), John Magnay, URA Commissioner General Annebrit Aslund, commissioner for administration Stephen Akabway, URA board chairman Dr. Eric Adriko, state minister for finance Mwesigwa Rukutana and grain traders.

The facility measures 10,000 square metres and can store 25,000 metric tonnes of grain.

The Government injected sh10b to complete the complex which was started 27 years ago and was formerly the property of the defunct Transocean (U) Ltd.

Cementers Ltd, a Kenya-based company, did the construction.

For the first year, UGT will occupy it free but will pay subsidised rent in the subsequent years.

URA is leasing it to UGT for 25 years. The subsidies are intended to motivate the export of non-traditional crops. UGT is a consortium of 16 grain companies including Corban Ltd of President Museveni’s daughter Patience Kokundeka Rwaboogo. Other companies belong to ex-New Vision board chairman Ateker Ejalu, Sports Club Villa boss Franco Mugabe, Hajji Migdad Saad, a Kasese tycoon, MP Mutebi Kityo and Chris Kaijuka, a Bushenyi businessman. Each shareholder injected a fee of sh6m.
