MBARARA resident district commissioner Joseph Arwata has blamed the recent gruesome incident in Nakivaale refugee resettlement camp on a local leadership vacuum, reports Allan Turyaguma
The crisis heightened when a Rwanda refugee of Hutu ethnicity, Vincent Majambere, invaded a home of a Ugandan, one Rwamirima, in the outskirts of Nakivaale and hacked to death his child and injured other members of his family.
Majambere was arrested by the Police.
He said refugee leaders and local officials in the area were fuelling land wrangles which have resulted in the murder of some people and destruction of property.
Arwata said, “In May, top district leaders including the district chairman, district internal security officer, the district Police commander and other official from the Prime Minister’s Office visited the camp and recommended that land redistribution be halted until fresh demarcation of the refugee land was completed.
“Unfortunately, shortly after we had left the camp, the refugee desk officer, Ronald Mayanja, with some other local officials continued distributing land,” he said.
Arwata said the Government was committed to ending the land encroachment problem. Ends
