IGANGA district officials on Monday failed to account for sh1b for the year 1998-1999 as required by the Auditor general .
Over 15 district officials led by the acting chief administrative officer (CAO) Mr. Nelson Kirenda, appeared before the local governments public accounts committee, but had no document to support their defence on several queries.
The queries include a shortfall in revenue collection of sh544,628,319, transfer of sh10,920,615 without audit, sh1,175,549 in unvouched expenditure and sh1,550,000, allegedly paid to Mao, Owor, Oulanyah and Company Advocates as legal costs.
Other queries include, sh22,443,512, which is personal advances, which the auditor general said may never be recovered since it was brought forward from 1995/1996 financial year.
“There appears to be no control over administrative advances. During the year under review, sh987,070,795 was advanced in addition to the sh200,600,906, which was brought forward from previous years.
Although sh788,745,225 was accounted for during the year, a total of sh400,926,476 which remains outstanding was excessively high,” the report said.
Other queries include sh1,368,000 used to repair a UN vehicle and unclaimed salaries.
The AG also queried the keeping of sh11,648,807 unclaimed salaries by the district, saying the money was supposed to be remitted to the Treasury.
The district team was ordered to produce documents backing their accountability before they re-appear before the committee. Ends
