UGANDA has made a giant leap in the FIFA/COCA COLA rankings, moving six places up from 114 in August to 108 in September.

It is a perfect reward for the national soccer team Cranes, still reflecting on their recent opening qualification 1-0 victory over Ghana’s fancied Black Stars.

Uganda’s under achievement from a series of handicaps had seen it fall from a creditable 66th in April 1995 to a record low 121 in July this year.

Kenya is the highest ranked East African country at 91 while world champions Brazil top the pile ahead of France and Spain.

- The national U-23 side Kobs, who were preparing for an international encounter with their Algerian counterparts, will not travel to Algiers after the hosts failed to raise a team in time, reports Norman Katende.

FUFA assistant secretary Zubairi Galiwango told the weekly Nile Special Super League press conference at Lugogo yesterday that this was brought about by the busy schedule in local competitions in Algeria.
“It is only Cranes to make it to Algeria now. The hosts will offer us air tickets and full board accommodation while we (FUFA) will look for players’ allowances,” said Galiwango.

Galiwango said the Algerian trip will be the start of a series of build up matches for the next Nations Cup qualifier against Rwanda in March.
