THE state minister for internal affairs, Sarah Kiyingi, yesterday launched the National Focal Point (NFP) on small arms and light weapons (SALW). The body will be mandated to work out strategies to control illicit firearms in the country, reports Steven Chandia.

Kiyingi, who also described the launch as a landmark in the crusade to control the proliferation of small and light weapons, announced that an experienced firm had been contracted to help the NFP formulate a national action plan to help in the fight against the proliferation of arms in the country.

Kiyingi was at the weekend speaking at Hotel International Muyenga, where the 15 members of the organisation sat for the first time within the framework of the Nairobi Declaration of March.

The NFP will hold a two-day workshop starting tomorrow, to draw a national action plan.
