A Kampala police officer was yesterday charged with theft following the double robbery of sh10m which turned a suspected robber into a victim.

Detective Corporal Gideon Beirensi attached to Kitebi Police post is accused of stealing sh10m out of sh12m which he recovered last month from a private security guard.

The guard made off with his client’s funds instead of taking it to the bank.

Beirensi appeared before Buganda road Court magistrate Susan Kanyange. He denied the charges.
He was remanded to Luzira prison till October 11. Kanyange advised Beirensi to get bail through the high court.

The state prosecutor, Marion Achio, said on August 29, at Kitebi police post, Beirensi recovered sh12m from Walemba Ayineyi but instead of handing over the whole amount, he withheld sh10 and declared only sh2m.

The money was the property of KENCOM.

Beirensi was also accused of destroying evidence which he knew was required in judicial proceedings.

The suspected robber from who Beirensi recovered the money is a key witness in case.
