BODA-boda cyclists’ tests in Kawempe began on Tuesday with the Traffic Police noting that many of the cyclists who turned up in great numbers, were ignorant of traffic road signs.
The testing exercise is part of Kampala City Council’s on-going exercise to check city road accidents that have involved many boda-boda cyclists and passengers.
KCC is handling the exercise with Kampala Traffic Police.
The deputy Kampala Regional Traffic Officer, Sarah Kibwika, said most of the cyclists needed more training.
“We’ve realised these people don’t even know the Highway Code. Instead of testing, the exercise has turned into training,” Kibwika said in an interview at Kawempe playground.
She said many of the cyclists did not possess riding permits.
There was mechanical testing of the motorcycles before riders could proceed for eyesight tests.
They underwent practical riding tests and were later tested on road signs.
The riders, after passing the tests, will be registered and have their motorcycles and helmets marked with KCC identification numbers.
Kibwika said those unregistered by the end of the exercise would be prohibited from operating. Ends
