THE Government will institutionalise the Apparels Tri-Star Uganda Ltd Textile Academy in Bugolobi into a permanent garment training institute.

Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, the minister for the presidency, said this yesterday while handing over the Emirates Air tickets to the six of the over 2,000 girls now training in garment making at the academy.

Bukenya said the Apparels Tri-Star management would bring in tutors and machinery for training more people to develop skills in garment-making and trade.

“We can use their facilities (Apparels Tri-Star’s machinery) machines and we really want this to be a continuous effort,” he said.

The six girls, Esther Nakasolo, Christine Nakalyowa, Rose Namakula, Loida Kyaligonza, Claire Nankya and Lillian Akora, cried tears of joy.

They travel to Sri-Lanka for a three-month training in specialised textile manufacture. They are part of 20 to be trained abroad.

Apparels managing director, Vellupillai Kananathan, who said the 20 girls were selected on good performance, said the girls would come back as supervisors at the factory. He said they would be dispatched in batches.

Kananathan said the factory would start production by the end of this month and its first exports are expected by November.
