JKT rode their luck to win the women’s handball championship at Makerere University yesterday.
CEREALS would have secured the ladies’ handball title yesterday on goal average if JKT had let their title grasp slip after a shock 23 -16 defeat to PEPSI Stars.
The result meant that Cereals failed completed a double after their male counterparts swept the men’s category on Thursday.
Few would have predicted the outcome at the start of the day. Both teams were at par with four points, with JKT needing more goals to turn the championship in their favour.
It was a soon going to be an overwhelming Cereal Produce Board triumph following their earlier victory in the mens’ category.
Home side Pepsi proved a better outfit, particularly after the late entry of center Beatrice Zawaddi who combined well with wingers Letisha Namuga and Harriet Apako.
Pepsi, composed mostly of former Railways players took third-place over holders Magereza whom they held to a 15-15 draw on Wednesday.
Coach Alberto Unjima blamed their earlier poor show to poor preparations.
“We were just picking our form on court. But if we had good training, this cup would be on our hands,” he said.
In the other match of the day, homeboys APTECH also avenged their defeat by routing JKT 33-25.
Denis Ochan led the assault for APTECH who led 14-9 by half time, with 10 goals while Augustine Mugalu contributed four.
Said Ajab led JKT’s chart with five goals with Said Ramadhan netting four.
Kingmakers Pepsi were third while Magereza finished bottom.
